IL Plan Learning Stages

The intention of this plan is to provide a comprehensive view of how all students attending COCC may develop the necessary skills to identify and use appropriate information resources for their college career and beyond. The library recognizes an information literate student will start by building foundational IL skills and then scaffold to higher-level skills within a specialized field or professional career. Within this context, the library's instructional efforts are tiered to reflect the progression of IL instruction. The following illustrates the expectations and outcomes for each IL Learning Stage and aligns the demonstrated knowledge for Tier One, Tier Two, and Tier Three to the ACRL Framework

 



 

IL Tier One Learning Stage

ACRL Framework Alignments

At this level, instruction aids students in their transition to college-level research either from high
school or after an absence from the educational environment, supporting “success from the start.”          
Instruction at this level seeks to:

 

  • Reduce anxiety typically associated with research and libraries.

  • Create awareness of key services and resources (reference desk, library collections, etc.).

  • Identify basic elements of the ethical use of information (citations).


Students may also be introduced to Tier Two.

Students at this stage are expected to understand essential elements of the following ACRL frames:

 

  • Information Has Value
  • Research as Inquiry

 

Expected target audience for Tier One Stage: First-year experience, entry-level, high school, or developmental education students

Related IL Program Goals and Objectives: The accomplishment of Tier One Learning Stage outcomes is tied to the library's IL programmatic Foundational Goals and Objectives, Intermediate Goals and Objectives,
and their corresponding measurements.

 

 

 

IL Tier Two Learning Stage

ACRL Framework Alignments

At this level, instruction focuses on library resources and introduction to IL concepts. Instruction at this level seeks to:

 

  • Identify and evaluate information, understanding its significance within its context.

  • Analyze topic statements and formulate search strategies.

  • Develop and use habits that enable students to effectively navigate the world of information.

  • Understand the importance and identify characteristics of scholarly sources.

  • Evaluate information available on the free web.

  • Communicate and use information ethically (plagiarism, citations).


Students may also be introduced to Tier Three.

Students at this stage are expected to understand the following ACRL frames:                                     

 

  • Authority Is Constructed and Contextual
  •  Information Creation as a Process 
  •  Information Has Value
  •  Research as Inquiry
  •  Searching as Strategic Exploration

Expected target audience for Tier Two Stage: Continuing, transfer-bound, or CTE students

IL Tier Three Learning Stage

ACRL Framework Alignments

Tier Three builds on Tier Two and allows students to practice higher-level IL skills. Instruction at this level seeks to:

 

  • Increase student knowledge and use of resources that are discipline- or subject-specific.

  • Apply advanced searching techniques.

  • Understand the process through which information is created and disseminated in a particular discipline.

  • Communicate and use information ethically (plagiarism, citations).

  • Emphasize the importance of critical evaluation of sources.

  • Understand the implications of information use and the significance of information within
    its context.

Students at this stage are expected develop a wider understanding of the following ACRL frames:

 

  • Authority is Constructed and Contextual 
  •  Information Creation as a Process
  •  Information Has Value
  •  Research as Inquiry
  •  Scholarship as Conversation
  •  Searching as Strategic Exploration

Expected target audience for Tier Three Stage: Faculty or degree-seeking, graduating, continuing, transfer-bound, or CTE students

Related IL Program Goals and Objectives: The accomplishment of Tier Three Learning Stage outcomes is tied to the library's IL programmatic Intermediate Goals and ObjectivesAdvanced Goals and Objectives, and their
corresponding measurements.

 

 

Instructional Program Commitments

To achieve these outcomes, Barber Library's instructional program team commits to:

  • Work with colleagues across the campus to integrate IL into courses and programs.
  • Offer library course credit opportunities for students who wish to receive comprehensive instruction in the use of the information landscape.  
  • Provide formal or informal instruction to individuals and classes, in person or online.
  • Promote the use of library resources in all formats to enhance teaching and learning.
  • Assess the impact of IL efforts on student progress and success to further guide enhancements in our IL programming.
