Foundational Goals and Objectives (redirected from Orientation Skills Stage)

Page history last edited by Kirsten Hostetler 4 years, 7 months ago

This section outlines Barber Library’s Foundational Goals and Objectives instruction program, specifically identifying the library’s efforts to integrate IL and establishing assessment strategies to measure success.

There are three goals to help guide the library's efforts to reach library patrons at an introductory level.

Foundational Goal 1

Establish relationships and engage with students. The library recognizes that it can play an important role helping students adjust to the social and academic demands of college life. IL is a set of foundational skills students need to develop from the start to help build their confidence as learners and creators of information.

Objective FGO.1.1

Participate in Bobcat Orientation to build relationships between new students and library staff and faculty to increase awareness of the Barber Library.

Measurements & Timeline:

To be completed annually:

    • Kirsten creates report detailing library staff participation in Bobcat Orientations for that academic year to be shared in library staff meeting

Task Update: see Academic Year 2017-18 Annual Assessments

    • Tina creates report detailing library staff participation in Family and Friends activity for that academic year to be shared in library staff meeting

Task Update: see Academic Year 2017-18 Annual Assessments

Objective FGO.1.2

Measurements & Timeline:

To be completed Fall 2017:

    • SPAM to meet for strategizing and developing a timeline for web focus group feedback; see FGO.3.4

Objective FGO.1.5

Provide support for state or local college credit initiatives where IL is a foundational skill (e.g., College Now, Expanded Options, other HS IL initiatives including AP and IB)

Measurements & Timeline:

To be completed annually:

    • Kirsten creates report based on One-Off IL Session Tracking detailing library participation in one-off sessions for that academic year to be shared with SPAM

Task Update: see Academic Year 2017-18 Annual Assessments

Foundational Goal 2

Provide foundational support with basic development of IL skills through the developmental education and human development curriculum. Introducing students to the library at the developmental education and human development course level helps these students connect to the available resources at an early stage and as they advance in their academic career path.

Objective FGO.2.1

Collaborate with Developmental Writing faculty and program coordinator to assess and further develop IL practices

Measurements & Timeline:

    • SPAM to discuss meeting with Developmental Writing Faculty and program coordinator to assess current practices and areas for perceived improvement

Measurements & Timeline:

To be completed Winter 2018:

    • SPAM to discuss meeting with HD instructors to assess current practices and areas for perceived improvement

Task Update: completed

Foundational Goal 3

Expand IL and research support for all students at all COCC campuses. As the northern COCC campuses continue to grow and serve larger populations of the tri-county community, the library commits to the NWCCU’s accreditation standard of ensuring the same quality access to resources and assistance on every campus. The library understands that each campus has unique information needs and that it is important to provide a breadth of learning opportunities to meet individual student needs regardless of location.

Objective FGO.3.1

Offer IL support at all northern campuses

Measurements & Timeline:

To be completed annually:

    • Marybeth creates report detailing IL sessions offered at all northern campuses for that academic year to be shared with SPAM

Task Update: see Academic Year 2017-18 Annual Assessments

Objective FGO.3.2

Explore ways to assess Redmond campus IL needs as progress is made on creating a Redmond library space

Measurements & Timeline:

library resources are used; consult with Stacey Donohue (previously conducted similar survey); to be used with IGO.1.1

Task Update: postponed
