Intermediate Goals and Objectives (redirected from Basic Skills Stage)

Page history last edited by Kirsten Hostetler 4 years, 7 months ago

This section outlines Barber Library’s Intermediate Goals and Objectives instruction program, specifically identifying the library’s efforts to integrate IL and establishing assessment strategies to measure success.

There are three goals to help guide the library's efforts to reach library patrons at a beginning level.

Intermediate Goal 1

Identify COCC courses with an IL outcome and develop strategies to support those outcomes. Information Literacy is often embedded throughout the college curriculum. Identifying areas where IL is a course outcome allows the library to have a more comprehensive approach in support of all such courses and helping students build their research skills in a systematic and progressive way.

Objective IGO.1.1

Provide instructors support for the design of effective IL course assignments

Measurements & Timeline:

To be completed annually:

    • Kirsten creates report detailing librarian meetings with faculty discussing IL integration into assignments,
assignment creation, collaboration efforts, embedded librarian activities, etc. for that academic year to be shared with SPAM

Task Update: see Academic Year 2017-18 Annual Assessments

To be completed Winter 2018:

    • Kirsten to create report based on Humanities Survey; to be used with FGO.3.4

Task Update: postponed

    • Kirsten to contact departments individually to address current information literacy strategies and to reevaluate survey in spring 2018; to be used with FGO.3.4

Task Update: postponed

Objective IGO.1.2

Define efforts to identify courses containing IL components

Measurements & Timeline:

To be completed annually:

    • Kirsten annually emails faculty who created a new or revised course during the previous academic year to ensure library resources/services adequately meets their needs.

Objective IGO.1.3

Provide general, discipline-oriented, and subject-specific IL support in the classroom for current curriculum and degree-seeking programs and certificates through one-shot IL sessions

Measurements & Timeline:

To be completed annually:

    • Marybeth creates report detailing librarian IL sessions, including student evaluation results and breaking down by department/program, for that academic year to be shared with SPAM

Task Update: see Academic Year 2017-18 Annual Assessments

    • Kirsten creates report of faculty evaluation results taken only during fall term to be shared with SPAM

Task Update: see Academic Year 2017-18 Annual Assessments

    • Kirsten emails instructors who requested IL Session at the end of every term to thank them and remind them to fill out IL Session Request form for next term

Intermediate Goal 2

Collaborate and build close working relationships between librarians and other college faculty. The Library stays committed to helping instructors discover the opportunities offered by its rich collections and services and use of such resources to enhance learning and teaching.  Working closely with instructors, librarians may serve as catalysts supporting student learning and helping faculty take the best advantage of the resources the Library makes available.

Objective IGO.2.1

Introduce IL concepts in workshops for faculty, including new faculty orientation and part-time orientation

Measurements & Timeline:

To be completed annually:

    • Kirsten creates report detailing librarian involvement in faculty orientations to be shared with SPAM

Task Update: see Academic Year 2017-18 Annual Assessments

    • Kirsten creates report detailing librarian involvement in part-time faculty orientations to be shared with SPAM

Task Update: see Academic Year 2017-18 Annual Assessments

To be completed Fall 2017:

    • Kirsten to suggest a Teaching Academy--"What is information literacy?"

Task Update: completed

Objective IGO.2.2

Invite faculty to Library open houses as a means to build relationships

Measurements & Timeline:

To be completed annually:

    • Kirsten to contact VPI admin annually to ensure Open House is added to fall return schedule agenda

Objective IGO.2.3

Integrate IL-related information in faculty trainings via Teaching Commons and Teaching Academy

Measurements & Timeline:

To be completed annually:

    • Kirsten creates report detailing librarian involvement in Teaching Commons for that academic year to be shared with SPAM

Task Update: see Academic Year 2017-18 Annual Assessments

Intermediate Goal 3

Connect with other college support services (e.g., Tutoring & Writing Center) where the Library’s instructional role may be relevant to student experiences. The Library recognizes that IL skills develop as part of the overall student experience and campus support they receive for their success.  Promoting awareness of the Library’s role as it connects to other campus support services creates opportunities for students to see the role of the library within the context of their whole college experience.

Objective IGO.3.1

Explore creative partnerships with additional instructional services

Measurements & Timeline:

To be completed annually:

    • Kirsten creates report detailing involvement in lab assistant trainings

Task Update: see Academic Year 2017-18 Annual Assessments

    • Kirsten creates report detailing involvement in writing center trainings and
      development of resources

Task Update: see Academic Year 2017-18 Annual Assessments

    • Kirsten creates report detailing involvement in RA and student tour guide trainings

Task Update: see Academic Year 2017-18 Annual Assessments
